It is a story of a sporting competition that has become a symbol for tennis as well as a means of reaching across frontiers. Davis Cup is as good a sporting contest as has yet been devised. There has been no need to change the format because the symmetry is perfect. Two singles on the first day; one second day doubles and; then two reverse singles on the third and final day.

The elation of victory: Arnaud Boetsch of France

Dwight Davis had a genius of an idea. The fact that the Davis Cup still plays an important part in the world game 102 years after the first match between the United States and Britain at the Longwood Cricket Club suggests that the Davis was absolutely right in his belief that the most individualist of sports could take another dimension.

There had already been 24 Wimbledon's by the time Davis organised the first official tennis match between two nations. But get a group of guys together, call them 'USA', 'France' or 'Sweden', wave a flag and suddenly everyone has different responsibilities.

While retaining the one-on-one nature of tennis combat, the Davis Cup embraces the need for co-operation between members of a team - an essential ingredient that has examined the character and motivation of some huge stars and asked them questions that were not always easy to answer. So how you interact with your team mates becomes as important as how you play.

Win or lose, team camaraderie is always important

But Davis Cup is not just about camaraderie. It has also achieved what Dwight Davis set out to achieve. It has brought countries together through sporting contact, often in the face of political opposition.

Whether it is played at Kooyong or Casablanca, a World Group final or a first round in the Euro/African Zone, Davis Cup offers tennis players the rare chance of experiencing the thrill of playing for your team mates and your country. For millions of sports enthusiasts around the globe, Davis Cup means tennis.
