Holcombe Ward Holcombe Ward bewildered the British Isles team with his twisty serve as he made up the Harvard Three - accompanying Dwight Davis and Malcolm Whitman - in the first Davis Cup battle in 1900, partnering the Cup's donor Davis to 3-0 victory. At Harvard, Ward had partnered Davis to the Intercollegiate doubles title in 1899, eventually breaking through as U.S. singles champion in 1904 beating Bill Clothier 10-8, 6-4, 9-7 to end the year as the best player in America during his seven years in the Top Ten.
The 5-foot-9-inch, 135lb right-hander played in the Davis Cup again in 1902 winning again, but lost to the British side on his last two Cup appearances in 1905-06. The New Yorker was an accomplished doubles player winning the U.S. Championships, six times in 1899-01, 1904-06; and appearing in the 1901 Wimbledon doubles final. In 1922 he reunited with Davis to win the U.S. Seniors 45s doubles title. Born on November 23rd 1878, Ward served as U.S.T.A. President between 1937 and 1947. He died on 23rd January 1967, aged 88.
